I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Boron Zone. It has a range of scientists studying all different topics. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
We do several things… but most of what we do is in the wild. We attach tracking GPS tags to them so we can follow where they swim, how fast they swim, how deep they dive and how they use their habitats. Sometimes we collect blood samples to see if they are healthy, or skin samples to look tav their DNA.

I’ll leave that one in the safe hands of Mark! π

Early in my career I was involved in some light plane surveys for dugongs, to help a PhD student. He was looking at numbers across the state and some of the principle sea grass beds, they relied on. That was however 25 years ago and I havenβt been involved in any dugong work since. Nor have I ever been involved in any turtle work. π
Everyone however can help dugongs, turtles and other marine animals. That help may differ depending on the person, but you could do research like Mark and make a real difference or alternatively we can all live more sustainable lives, thereby minimising our impact on the planet; ensure we dispose of rubbish appropriately and pick it up if we see it lying around; also importantly by ensuring our communities and politicians know these animals and their habitats are important to us. All of these things can make a difference.
So we can all play our part in aiding marine animals – in the end it just depends what part you would like to play. π
