To predict when a solar eclipse will occur, you need to know as much as you can about how the Earth orbits the Sun and how the Moon orbits the Earth.
This sounds easy, but is actually quite tricky: the Moon “wobbles” as it orbits the Earth, which causes the Earth to wobble as it orbits the Sun. Luckily we have measured this wobble and can predict how much and when it will occur. And believe it or not, over a long period of time, you also have to include the effects of the other planets in the Solar System!
