Question: What is the atomic world like?

Keywords: ,

  1. That is a tough question to answer! Perhaps the best description is “sticky” – atoms and molecules tend to stick to any surface that they come across. I guess it is very different to the everyday world, because the atomic world is ruled by the laws of quantum physics – which are quite different to the “classial physics” that we are used to in our everyday lives.

  2. I always imagined it as being filled with lots of space, rather than sticky? With the odd electron whizzing around and a clumped nucleus in the centre. I guess this is an image from classic physics? Thanks Matthew.

  4. Good question – I’m glad a quantum physicist is on hand to answer it! I always imagined it being “sticky” too, based on my university physics classes.
