  1. If there was no pay it would be hard to do science full time, but I would continue to do it as a hobby or volunteer

  2. Yes we all get paid. If I didn’t get paid I would do something else – but would still try and find things out for fun. Several hundred years ago, most scientists were “gentlemen of leisure” – ie they were independently wealthy (or sponsored by a king) and did it for fun.

In my opinion, today cutting edge science is often sufficiently sophisticated that it really requires your full attention. However, some amateur astronomers continue to make useful discoveries. And I think volunteers help out with research on wildlife. So there are opportunities.

  3. Yes, we all get paid. Although if I think even if I didn’t get paid I’d be a scientist at heart. Once you’ve studied and worked in science, I think you’re always a scientist, regardless of what you do for a job. Being a scientist is a mindset.

  4. Yes I get paid to be a scientist. However for a time I worked in marketing and while I did this I still considered myself a scientist. During much of my career I have also undertaken unpaid research or have been involved with educating people about science. So yes I would continue to be a scientist, even if I didn’t get paid. 😀

  5. Yes I get paid. None of us are lucky enough to be financially independent, so we all need to do something that pays! If I didn’t get paid to do science I’d have to find another job to earn some money, but I would still be a scientist at heart.
