I studied for a four year undergraduate degree in physics, and then enrolled in a postgraduate research degree called a doctorate (or PhD) that took a bit less than another four years.

Similar to Matthew, it took me four years to finish my undergraduate degree in physics and then about three and a half years to complete my PhD. But I’m still studying and learning even now as part of my job!

It took me ages because i changed my mind – 4 years of undergraduate degree, a year of honours research and 4 years of PhD.

3 years undergrad (but I took a year out to work in the middle of that), then about 3.5 years to do a PhD. I was a bit lucky, I got through my education at a time when you didn’t have to do a Masters degree as well as a 3 year degree before doing a PhD. I think you generally have to do at least 4 years now to get into a PhD.
Its a long haul – I think its really important to take some time out somewhere between school and finishing your studies.
