Question: is evolution complicated??

Keywords:

  1. Yes and no!

The theory itself is straight forward – in a population individuals show different inherited traits and over time those traits will shift in response to environmental “change”. The organisms that are able to take advantage of such a change will survive, while those that unable to will decline or die out. The survivors are said to be better adapted for the given environmental conditions – winners and losers.

The theory becomes complicated as the biochemical mechanisms for those changes (e.g. duplication or translocation of chromosomes) and how the environment is altered (e.g. continental drift, climate change) are considered.

  2. It can be – depending on how much detail you want to get into. I think there is a great answer in the disease or organ zones about evolution. Worth watching is the dvd Flock of dodos

  3. As with most things, the principles of evolution are straightforward, but it’s when you get down into the detail that things get complicated. James’ answer sums things up pretty nicely!
