Question: why do you think it is so impotant to find out about space?

Keywords:

  1. There are two parts to this answer (I think I touched on it briefly in our chat session today). The first part is philosophical: by understanding what’s out there in space, we can answer questions like “Are we alone in the Universe?” and better understand our place in the universe. We can also look at the universe and space to understand how the Earth formed and how life started.

The second part is technological: one of the great technological advances of the last 20 years is the invention of wireless internet, which was invented to get radio telescopes to communicate with each other so they could observe black holes. Many imaging techniques in medicine were derived by astronomers. And without understanding space, we would not have global position systems (GPS). So there are lots of spin offs that benefit society!
