Question: I have a very large aviary in my backyard. Would it be a lightning conducter. It is thin sheet metal.

  1. Any metal will conduct electricity – and hence lightning. Do you mean “will it attract lightning?” I think it tends to be the tallest objects nearby that lightning hits – more likely to be trees I would guess.

  2. The sheet metal is likely to be iron, which is a good conductor! So yes your aviary could be struck by lightning…

However it is probably a relatively low structure and there are likely to be many other taller structures in the area, which would also conduct electricity. The lightning is more likely to strike on of these.

  3. I would imagine the chances are fairly low of an aviary being struck unless it is very high or way out in the open.

  4. Sheet metal should be a good conductor of electricity, so yes it would also be a lightning conductor because of this. The taller it is the higher the chance of being struck by lightning, but I imagine there are other things, like trees, nearby that are more likely to be struck.

If you want to decrease the chances of the aviary being struck, you could install a lightning rod nearby – this is a simple metal rod made of metal that conducts electricity very well that sits higher than the structure you’re trying to protect.
