Question: Why is time constant?

Keywords:

  1. Do you mean, why does it appear to proceed at a constant rate? You know, that is a really good question. There are physicists who think about and try to better understand the nature of time (in quantum mechanics there is no “operator” for time, which is a bit odd if I understand it correctly, because there is an equivalent for everything else we can measure.)

If you mean something else, please elaborate.

  2. Time does appear to proceed at a constant rate, but I’ve always wondered if that’s because it’s a human construct.

There are different ways to measure time. Astronomers have several different systems, most notably connected to the motion of the stars in the sky relative to Earth; a second in this “sidereal” system is actually shorter than a regular second!

And finally, I couldn’t discuss time here without this quote from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: “Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.” 🙂

  3. I don’t know about anyone else but time is certainly not constant in our house! Of our nine clocks only 2-3 agree at any one time?

Really pleased the physics boys have this one covered!

  5. I hope its not too constant, I’d quite like to go home at the end of the day…
