Gold is made of…. gold. Its an element, just like oxygen or hydrogen or iron. It just happens to be quite rare, and that’s why we value it so highly.
Diamonds are made from pure carbon (yes really!). Exactly the same stuff as the graphite lead in your pencil, just in a different crystal form. Carbon forms diamonds at very high pressures, so diamonds come from very deep in the earth, where everything gets squeezed really hard. I didn’t know how long it takes to make a diamond so I had to look it up… turns out it takes a really really really really long time, a few billion years!
