Actually, stars only *appear* to stay in the one place. They are really moving around through space all the time, but they move so slowly that we can’t see it.
If you looked at Alpha Centauri, which is actually two stars close together, with a pair of binoculars and then came back 15 years later, you would be able to see that they had moved.
