Question: I remember once when I was little I visited our farm, and when we opened the door to the shed, a huge swarm of huntsman spiders came out from behind it. I've never seen them in this larger type of group, (around 50 of them). Does this happen for a reason?

  1. Although I don’t know the location – It is likely that you encountered a Social Huntsman (Delena cancerides). Unlike most spiders which are solitary, these spiders tend to exist in large groups – which may be up to 300 strong.

The group you saw of around 50 is likely to be typical.

These spiders are often used in movies because of their social habit – including things like Arachnophobia and Spiderman
