I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Boron Zone. It has a range of scientists studying all different topics. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Ok, here goes:
1. Its renewable – unlike fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), it won’t run out any time soon. We could never use all of the heat inside the earth!
2. It has very low greenhouse gas emissions (unlike fossil fuels). Some people would say it has no emissions, but that’s not true because you have to use some other forms of energy to drill holes, build your geothermal power plant, run the water pumps etc. But its a lot “cleaner” than fossil fuels.
3. Unlike some other renewable energy sources (like wind and solar), geothermal energy is a continuous energy source. It doesn’t depend on the weather or the time of day. This is important, because it means you can use it all the time and you don’t have to store it.
4. We can use geothermal energy to do things like heating and cooling of buildings, without having to convert it to electricity first. This means it is (potentially) more efficient than some other energy sources.
